Off-peak traffic plan
During the spring 2010 semester, the University Police Department began the trial phase of an off-peak traffic plan. The trial involved a campus ID checkpoint that was conducted Sunday-Saturday, 9:30 p.m. until 4:30 a.m., at the intersection of John Mitchell Drive and Laurel Street.
The purpose of the plan was to control all traffic entering the campus and to limit access to specific areas and only to authorized persons. John Mitchell Drive was closed to all public vehicular traffic that did not possess proper University identification. After 9:30 p.m., all faculty, staff, and students were required to produce a campus ID before accessing John Mitchell Drive by vehicle. Entrance to the campus was made available via Laurel Street at Bluford Street, Laurel Street at Lindsay Street, Laurel Street at East Market Street, and Arthur Headen Drive at Dudley Street. All other entrances to the campus were closed at 9:30 p.m. Contract security officers and University police officers managed the checkpoint.
The trial phase of the revised traffic plan was deemed a success. There was less vehicular traffic observed on campus, and John Mitchell Drive was transformed from a loitering zone to a place where students could walk and congregate peacefully. As a result of the successful trial phase, the University is implementing the new traffic plan on a permanent basis, effective Oct. 20.
