For the 13th year, high school journalists and their advisors will participate in the annual High School Media Day Workshop at North Carolina A&T State University, Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Memorial Student Union.
The event is sponsored by the N.C. A&T Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in cooperation with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association.
"This year's workshop will include not only the tried and true sessions from the past such as yearbook, newspaper writing, layout and design, television, photography, and video editing, it will bring back the ‘Editors Only Session' where all yearbook and newspaper editors will participate in a roundtable discussion sharing ideas, challenges and solutions faced by student editors," said Linda Florence Callahan, professor and director of the workshop.
Each participant will choose three sessions from among the 19, 50-minute sessions being offered. Some of the topics include Advising, Broadcast Careers, Adobe InDesign, Photojournalism, Newspaper Layout/Design, Newspaper Writing/Reporting, Sports Photography, Television, Video Editing, and Yearbooks.
Among the sessions offered for the first time this year are "Stress Management: Finding Balance in Ones' Life," "Social Media Etiquette," and "An Introduction to Sound Slides," a multi-media tool for adding audio and captions to slide shows. In addition, entertainment will be provided during the opening and general sessions.
The general session and lunch, "Skyping, Tweeting, Texting: Multi-media Tools in Journalism," will feature CBS News correspondent and author Byron Pitts, keynote speaker, via Skype. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.
The event can be followed on Twitter @HSmediaday or on Facebook, NCAT High School Media Day. For more details, contact Callahan at (336) 334-7221 x3003 or lindac@ncat.edu.
