Lunch and conversations

November is Career Development Month, and the Office of Career Services (OCS) has planned many activities for the Aggie family. As part of the celebration, you are invited to join the OCS staff for lunch and conversations on Monday, Nov. 15, or Tuesday, Nov. 16, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Memorial Student Union, room 209. Co-sponsored by Norfolk Southern Corporation, the event is designed to provide an opportunity to meet the OCS staff, learn about the services and resources provided by the Office, discover how OCS can benefit your respective areas, and answer any questions you may have.

 

To participate, RSVP online by Wednesday, Nov. 10. Space is limited and available on a first-come basis and is limited; so don't delay.

Honors conference

North Carolina A&T State University, in conjunction with North Carolina Central University and Winston-Salem State University, will host the 19th Annual Conference of the National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP) at the Downtown Marriott, Nov. 10-13.  In addition to business meetings, the conference will consist of scholarly presentations, cultural events, and academic competitions in Model African Union, Debate, and Quiz Bowl. Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry Frye will judge the final round of debates, and representatives from many of the nation's most prestigious graduate schools will be on hand for the Graduate School Fair. 

 

N.C. A&T has been a member of NAAAHP since the inception of its University Honors Program in 1998. This is the first year that the conference will be held in North Carolina. Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. will bring greetings at the opening event, "A Night at the Theater," Wednesday evening, Nov. 10.

Inventor's series

As part of its Inventor's Corner series, the Office of Technology Transfer will present "Effective Prior Art Searching: Introduction to Using Literature and Patent Databases," featuring Certified Patent Agent Laura Collins, Thursday, Nov. 18, 2-3:30 p.m., in the Fort IRC Building, room 410. Topics include how to craft a strong patent search, the most effective patent search databases, using IP searches to strengthen inventions, and different types of prior art within the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Alzheimer's project gala

Every 70 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer's disease; there is no cure. North Carolina A&T State University is combining science and the arts to raise awareness about the disease with the Keeping Memories Alive Alzheimer's Project, which kicks off with a black tie optional gala and dinner Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Alumni-Foundation Event Center. Featured performers include vocalist Barbara Weathers (formerly of Atlantic Starr), the N.C. A&T State University Choir, the N.C. A&T Jazz Band, and the E. Gwynn Dancers. Local news anchor Sandra Hughes will emcee.

Tune In

"A&T Today, the Radio Edition"will air at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the first and second Thursdays in November on WNAA, 90.1 FM. The first half of the show features Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. providing updates on the N.C. A&T's athletics, academic expectations, budget challenges, and more. In the second half, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Linda Thompson Adams shares her exciting career experiences, future partnerships and collaborations, and A&T's bright future. Betty Foust Chapman

Betty Foust Chapman, assistant professor in the department of business education, with Ronda Henderson of Middle Tennessee State University, presented their research, "Mobile Devices: Learning Tools or Distractions," last month at the Southern Business Education Association Convention in Charleston, S.C. The study was funded by a research grant from Delta Pi Epsilon, National Honorary Professional Graduate Society in Business Education.

Jeffrey Edwards

Jeffrey Edwards, chair of the department of economics and finance, has published two articles: "GDP Growth Volatility and Regional Free Trade Agreements" appears in Applied Econometrics and International Development and "Accounting for Regional Variance Heterogeneity of Growth" in Applied Economics.

 

Earl M. Hilton III

Earl M. Hilton III has been appointed interim athletics director. Hilton most recently served as assistant vice chancellor of student affairs and he also has served as associate athletics director. The announcement was made today by Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. He has extensive experience in athletics and expertise in NCAA compliance, budget oversight and personnel management. Prior to coming to A&T, Hilton was assistant athletics director at Buffalo State University and academic counselor for athletics at Texas Tech University.

Ewuukgem Lomo-David

Ewuukgem Lomo-David, associate professor in the department of business education, presented at the 50th conference of International Association for Computer Information Systems held in Las Vegas on Oct. 6-9, 2010. His paper titled, "Familiarity with Data Security Measures: A Function of the Number of Days of Waiting for Repairs of a Malfunctioned Computer" also appears in the conference proceedings.
