NEW PAYROLL SYSTEM GOES LIVE

The University's new Banner HR payroll system is up and running. All permanent employees, along with any adjunct, temporary or student employees who are paid at a flat rate, received their first pay from the new system Oct. 29.

And, pay stubs that once were delivered by mail are now available on the Self-Service Banner (SSB) site, where employees also can view leave balances and withholding, insurance and retirement information.

A dedicated phone line has been established through the Aggie Pride Solutions Center for handling questions and issues related to the new system. The line is accessible Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., at (336) 285-2492.

Beginning this month, employees will report their leave via SSB Leave Reporting. The function becomes operational Monday, Nov. 15.

With the new system, employees must complete their leave report by payroll deadlines. Failure to meet a deadline can result in pay being deferred until the next pay cycle.

Got questions? Visit the Human Resources website for pay schedules, training manuals, past communications and frequently asked questions (FAQs). The information is located in the "Announcements, Banner/HR Payroll" section.

NATIONAL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM WANTS ABSTRACTS

The Annual Ronald E. McNair Commemorative Celebration will celebrate its 25th anniversary, Jan. 26-28, 2011. The celebration is held annually in conjunction with the National Research Symposium, which will be in its tenth year.

The McNair celebration and research symposium are designed to commemorate the life and accomplishments of the late Ronald E. McNair, an alumnus of North Carolina A&T State University. The symposium will provide undergraduate, graduate and faculty scholars the opportunity to present research findings, hear and view cutting edge research, engage in meaningful dialogues, and network with other scholars and graduate school representatives.

Student and faculty scholars who have conducted research and presented their findings in poster or oral format are invited to make presentations. Presenters must submit abstracts for inclusion in the program proceedings via email to remcnair@ncat.edu along with the Abstract Submission Form that can be found on the Presenters page (a drop down item in the site's menu under Symposium) on the N.C. A&T McNair website. The deadline for submission is Jan. 18, 2011; however, the submission of abstracts is encouraged as soon as possible to ensure inclusion in the program proceedings.

A&T students and faculty may register for the event free of charge. For additional information, visit the McNair website, or contact Joyce E. Brown, symposium chair, at jebrown3@ncat.edu, remcnair@ncat.edu, (336) 334-7109 or (336) 256-0208.

A&T'S NEW RESEARCH FRONTIER: SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

There's more to research than engineering and agriculture … even at A&T.

Researchers in the social and behavioral sciences traditionally have been an underrepresented group among Aggie researchers. But they're here, they're producing important work, and now they're getting a new level of support.

On Oct. 26, the Division of Research and Economic Development held a workshop on research in the social and behavioral sciences. Topics included the following: "Why research in this area is important — especially now"; "What currently is happening in the field"; "How to combine and integrate social and behavioral science research across disciplines and within community engagement"; and "Research methods, proposal development, and managing SBS research projects."

Sharon Cook, director of the social work program, was among the presenters, which included participants from UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University.
