Three seniors and staff members of the university newspaper, The A&T Register, have been selected as interns to work on the student projects for the National Association of Black Journalists convention in New Orleans, June 18-24.

Sylvia Obell, Kelcie McCrae and Kenneth L. Hawkins, all journalism and mass communication majors in the print journalism sequence, will spend five days working in a multi-platform, daily newsroom environment. They will be writing news and features as well as shooting video, recording audio and taking photos.

Obell, a native of Ewing, N.J., is the managing editor of The A&T Register. She was selected as part of the 2011 Freedom Forum Scholars class and has interned at the News & Record in Greensboro and the Advocate Messenger in Danville, Ky. She is a graduating senior and will attend graduate school at Columbia University in the fall.

McCrae, a Clayton, N.C. native, is the editor in chief of The A&T Register. She will be traveling to South Africa in May with the Institute for Advanced  Journalism Studies and then to Brazil for the fall semester. McCrae’s internships include the News & Record in Greensboro and Green Bay Gazette in Green Bay, Wis., as a Chips Quinn Scholar.

Hawkins, an Atlanta native, will be making his third appearance as an NABJ intern. He previously participated in 2010 and 2011. He is the photo editor for The A&T Register. He reports as a photographer to the Indianapolis Star on May 27, when he will begin a Pulliam Fellowship. His past internships include the News & Record in Greensboro, St. Petersburg Times and the New York Times Summer Institute in New Orleans.
