Aggies Named to the All-MEAC Softball Team

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released the All-MEAC softball lists and North Carolina A&T is well represented.

First baseman Juanita Jernigan and third baseman Tranea Jones were named to the first and second teams, respectively. The conference also released the All-Academic honorees for softball and half of A&T’s 12-person roster was listed.

Catcher Sabrina Edmonds, infielder Hope Fletcher, utility player Tiffany Macklin, center fielder Dominique Smith, designated player Erica  Turner and Jones were all recognized for maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

“I think it is absolutely awesome,” said head coach Mamie Jones about Jernigan and Jones earning All-MEAC honors. “JJ and Tranea both are deserving of their perspective recognitions.”

  • Jernigan was having an MVP-type season before a pulled hamstring slowed her down midway through the month of April. She enters the tournament batting .358 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 37 games played. In six separate games this season Jernigan had at least three hits, including a stretch of three straight games April 7-10 where she had three hits in each of those games.

  • Jones (5-6, Hickory, N.C.) excelled in conference play. In 15 games against MEAC opponents, Jones batted .348 with two home runs, four doubles and seven RBI. She went 4-for-8 with two doubles and one home run in a three-game sweep of S.C. State in late March. As the MEAC tournament begins, Jones is hitting .319 and is tied for the team lead in doubles with nine. On the academic side, Jones majors in social work. She is also an A&T scholar athlete and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association scholar athlete.

  • Edmonds (5-8, Riverside, Calif.) had a great season at the plate with a .310 batting average. She is a nursing and psychology major. Edmonds leads the MEAC in home runs with 10.

  • Fletcher (5-4, Cincinnati, Ohio) was a second-team All-MEAC selection in 2011. She was recently recognized as the player with  the highest grade point average on the softball team with a 3.68 as a fashion merchandise and design major. This is her second academic honor from the MEAC. She is also an A&T and NFCA scholar.

  • Macklin (5-2, Rocky Mount, N.C.) is a psychology major who provides the Aggies with a player who can play multiple positions. She has been the Aggies second baseman and left fielder this season.

  • Smith (5-6, Altamonte Springs, Fla.) is the Aggies leadoff hitter. She is a fashion merchandise and design major, batting .281 with two home runs, eight stolen bases and 19 RBI. She leads the Aggies in runs scored with 29.

  • Turner (5-5, Kaiserslautern, Germany) rounds out the academic honors for A&T. She is a computer science major who is the Aggies’ designated player.
