CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO BE OFFERED

Student advisement (repeat!)

The student advisement period for fall 2011 began March 1 and ends April 29. Encourage students to meet with their advisors prior to Friday, April 29. Students will be able to register for the fall semester April 4-29; however, they must receive a valid PIN from the advisor to register. Students who register by the spring deadline will not incur a late registration fee in the fall and the stress of not knowing if courses are still open.

New radio talk show

"On Point," a new radio talk show hosted by Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr., debuts Friday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m. on WNAA 90.1 FM. Future shows will air on the first Friday of each month.

 

The show's objective is twofold: (1) to inform and educate listeners about the broad range of innovations and accomplishments occurring at North Carolina A&T State University and their impact on the community at large, and (2) to provide opportunities to engage and exchange ideas. The first guest, Alice Stewart, associate professor of strategic management in the School of Business and Economics, will discuss her award-winning theory on stackable knowledge units.

High performance workshop

"Achieving High Performance through Small Acts of Inclusion," the Center for Leadership and Organizational Excellence's (CLOE) next workshop for faculty and staff, will be held Tuesday, March 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at 1020 Wendover Ave., in room 007. The workshop will focus on how to capitalize on individual differences and achieve higher productivity, collaboration and high-powered performance teams in the workplace. Spring Break closing

The Campus Recreation Center will be closed Saturday, March 5, through Sunday, March 13. In accordance with the University's Spring Break schedule, the facility will resume normal hours of operations Monday, March 14.

Aggie TV

The A&T Television Studio, housed in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, produces two biweekly 30-minute shows, "The Aggie Sports Report" and "The Aggie Insider," that air weekdays on channel 30. The former can be viewed at 11 a.m., and the latter at 3 p.m. The shows also broadcast on Time Warner Cable, channel 8, Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and Mondays at 8:30 a.m., respectively, as well as Black Network Television, digital channel 20-2, Mondays at noon and 7 p.m.

 

Another show, "The Hot Seat," can be viewed weekdays at 1 p.m. on A&T TV and online at AggieInfoNet, or by clicking the Aggie TV link on the University's home page.

2011 N.C. Awards

Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state. Created by the General Assembly in 1961, and administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the award recognizes significant individual contributions in fine arts, literature, public service and science.

 

Nominations may be submitted by anyone and must include a completed nomination form and cover letter, as well as the nominee's biography or resume. Letters of support and examples of the nominee's work also will be accepted. All materials should be sent to the North Carolina Awards Committee, N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, 4601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4601.

 

Nominations will be accepted by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources until Friday, April 15. The North Carolina Awards Committee will review the nominations and make its selections this summer. The recipients will be honored during ceremonies in Raleigh in the fall. Leonora C. Bryant

Leonora C. Bryant, director of alumni affairs, was a presenter at the 2011 CASE Districts III and IV Conference, "CASE Fusion 3D4," held Feb. 20-23, in New Orleans. Bryant addressed the topic, "Running a Successful Comprehensive Alumni Program with Minimal Staff (and Resources).

Loury Floyd

Loury Floyd, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, served as the student coordinator for the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Council during the organization's annual conference in Winston-Salem, N.C., Feb. 3-4.

Karen Guy, director of student teaching and internships; Thurman Guy, associate professor of family and consumer sciences, and Kimberly Williams, a senior early education and family studies (birth to kindergarten) major, made a presentation at the 2011 Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching, Feb. 5, at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The presentation was titled "Advancing Active Learning in Higher Education."

Carlo Laurore

Carlo Laurore, has been hired as director of gift planning in the Office of Development. In this role, he will collaborate closely with major donors and prospects to introduce opportunities to support the University through lifetime and testamentary gifts.

 

Laurore comes to A&T from Branch Banking & Trust Company (BB&T) in Wilmington, N.C., where he served as vice president of business services. A UNC Wilmington graduate, he also attended the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University and is a Certified Financial Planner practitioner.

Jerono P. Rotich, assistant professor of human performance and leisure studies, presented a paper, "Inclusive and Cultural Culturally Sensitive Physical Education and Recreation Programs," at the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education Annual Conference, held Jan. 5-8, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Teresa Jo Styles

Teresa Jo Styles, a professor of journalism and mass communication, participated in the "Challenges in TV Production, Businesses and Policy" symposium held in Stockholm, Sweden. Negotiations for productions and rights, production quotas and copyright of formats and cross-border taxation of digital downloads were discussed by European lawyers, broadcasters, regulators and media scholars. Styles published "Public Enemies"in David Sloan's eighth edition of The Media in America, a media history textbook used by about 120 schools of journalism and mass communication.  

Ereka Williams

Ereka Williams, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, has been appointed to the 2011 Regional Screening Committee for the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program. She was nominated by and is serving on behalf of the North Carolina Middle School Association.
