25th MCNAIR COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION AND 10th RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM PLANNED

North Carolina A&T State University will host its 25th Annual Ronald E. McNair Commemorative Celebration and 10th National Research Symposium, Jan. 26-28.more

Scholarships and assistantships

The Computer Science Department has been awarded $135,000 in industry grants from Google, State Farm and Lockheed-Martin for tuition scholarships and undergraduate research assistantships. The department currently has undergraduate research programs in Cyber Security, Advanced Biometrics, Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Sensor Network Fusion, and Social Networking. The department aims to provide the equivalent of a tuition scholarship to every student who can obtain a 3.0 semester GPA regardless of their current GPA to motivate students to strive for academic excellence.

Community service

Volunteers are needed to serve as reading and lunch buddies at Washington Montessori School, Hampton Leadership Academy and Rankin Elementary School as a pre-observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Friday, Jan. 14, 9-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

 

Volunteers are also needed at various locations in Greensboro on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 17, 9-11 a.m. and 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Black Child Development, Cover Creek Garden (30 slots), Urban Ministry (7), Salvation Army (25), Volunteer Center of Greensboro, Barber Park (200), Habitat Restore, Beloved Community Center, Greensboro Children's Museum, and Welfare Reform (200).

 

Transportation will be provided from campus to all of these Student Affairs-sponsored community service opportunities. For additional details, call (336) 334-7792.

Phoebe Butler-Ajibade

Phoebe Butler-Ajibade, assistant professor in the Human Performance and Leisure Studies Department, and colleague Damian Stanziano of Miami University have co-authored a manuscript that appears in the Journal of the National Medical Association (January 2011), "Differences in Health-Related Behaviors and Body Mass Index Risk Categories in African American Women in College." Butler-Ajibade also has a paper in the ABNF Journal titled "Health Risk Behaviors of Black Male College Students: Seat Belt Use, Smoking, and Obesity Status."

Jerono Rotich, an assistant professor in the Human Performance and Leisure Studies Department, presented a paper, "Sports as a Metaphor to Unite and Empower Kenyan Youth to Champion Peace and Development in the 21st Century," at the Kenyan Scholars and Students International Conference in Bowling Green, Ohio. During the conference, Rotich was elected to serve as a Southern-Regional Representative of the Kenya Scholars and Studies Association. His term will expire in 2012.

Dana Taylor

Dana Taylor, university program specialist in the Department of Biology, recently presented the undergraduate student research training pipeline model at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Creativity, Inquiry, and Discovery: Undergraduate Research In and Across the Disciplines Conference held in Durham, N.C. The presentation was titled "Preparing Minority Students for Research Careers in the Biomedical Sciences."

 

The pipeline begins as early as high school to tap into students’ research potential while helping them balance research with academic performance. The model includes enrichment programs, workshops, seminars, and site visits to adequately prepare student for terminal degree programs and eventual research careers in the sciences.

Patricia Whitfield

Patricia Whitfield, interim associate dean in the School of Education, has completed BRIDGES, The University of North Carolina's intensive leadership development program for women in higher education. The 2010-2011 class included women from public and private colleges and universities from across the state.
