Call for designs

Students enrolled in the College of Engineering, the School of Technology and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design's Landscape Architecture Program are encouraged to participate in the SOAR project, a call for design ideas for the Bluford Circle round-about. The competition is being sponsored by Vines Architecture, Inc., based in Raleigh, N.C.

The aim of the competition is to design and solicit nontraditional, unique approaches to the idea of an inspiring site element that can add to the experience of the circle and the campus at large. The site element may have an exterior and interior experience. Entrants are asked to consider vehicular and pedestrian circulation around the site, the circle's immediate relationship to surrounding buildings and green space. There are no restrictions on height or materials. However, students are asked to consider the constructability of their entries.

Individual and group entries are due Friday, March 4, and will be collected at the Memorial Student Union information desk, adjacent to Stallings Ballroom, from 3-5 p.m. Entries will be judged by a panel of A&T studio professors, Vines Architecture, Cannon Design, landscape architects, members of AIA Regional, N.C. A&T Trustees and Facilities Department staff.

Finalist entry judging will be held Wednesday, April 6, 1-3 p.m., and winners will be announced immediately following. The first-place cash prize is $750, and $400 and $250 for second and $250 third place, respectively.

For additional details about the competition, contact Ronnie Bailey at (336) 334-7575, or via email at phase@ncat.edu.
