BUNCUM TO SPEAK AT
FALL CONVOCATIONAlumna and N.C. A&T Board of Trustees Chair Pamela McCorkle Buncum ’81 will be the keynote speaker for the North Carolina A&T University Fall Convocation – Thursday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. in Harrison Auditorium.
Buncum has been a member of the N.C. A&T Board of Trustees since 2007. Last Friday, Sept. 17, she was elected to a second term as board chair.
After working as an accountant and financial internal auditor for approximately 12 years, Buncum has since switched her focus to community and public school volunteer service. Since 1993, she has used her time and talents volunteering with various parent-teacher associations, school councils, community and civic organizations in North Carolina, Maryland, Florida and currently Georgia.
These experiences prepared her for a 2008 campaign for DeKalb County School Board At-Large District 8. Even though this first attempt at public office ended in a run-off and not a win, she successfully broadened her network of county/state elected officials, business/faith-based community leaders and concerned parents. Buncum currently serves on the DeKalb County School System Citizens Advisory Committee, the oversight committee for the school district’s $466 million Capital Improvement Plan.
Buncum has received various awards and recognition for her volunteer work and dedication to students. She says that one of her greatest honors was accepting the Center for Education Reform’s National Charter School of the Year award for Chamblee Charter High School in 2007, in the U.S. Capitol Building.
A native of Mt. Holly, N.C., Buncum has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Her husband Kelvin, also a graduate of A&T, is owner and president of International Medical Solutions, LLC. They reside in Atlanta with their two sons, Omari, a student at Morehouse College, and Bakari, an 11th grader at The Ben Franklin Academy.
WNAA-FM/HD has a new home. After 44 years in its original location in Price Hall, the station recently moved to its new location on the third floor of Crosby Hall.
"The new facility is larger, modern and beautiful," said Tony Welborne, general manager. "It is also futuristic and employs some the latest energy saving technology, making it one of the greener facilities on campus."
Anyone who visited the old studio in recent years will appreciate the new aesthetics. The main entrance, which is all glass, leads into an open-air style lobby, and the hallway is lined with large photos of legends in the music industry.
The new location puts the station under the same roof as the A&T television studio and the majority of the Journalism and Mass Communications Department (JOMC). This will make the station more accessible and convenient for JOMC students, and allow it to play a greater role in events such as the annual NABJ workshop.
"Our new studios will provide a greater opportunity for more student involvement and creativity," Welborne said.
