EMPLOYEES LAUDED FOR OVER 700 YEARS OF SERVICE

Changes are ahead for State Health Plan participants

Effective July 1, coverage for ALL faculty and staff enrolled in the State Health Plan will automatically default to the 70/30 Basic Plan. 

 

Employees and covered dependents who are non-smokers and wish to remain in the 80/20 Standard Plan MUST sign-on to the State Health Plan online enrollment system to attest that they are non-smokers to be eligible to re-enroll in the 80/20 plan. If no action is taken, coverage will remain at the 70/30 level. Smokers will only be eligible to enroll in the 70/30 plan and will not have to take further action once defaulted.

 

Employees who want to enroll in the 80/20 Standard Plan for July 1, MUST log onto http://ncat.hrintouch.com and complete the attestation (confirmation) questions in the HR InTouch system to verify that (1) they and any family member(s) who will be covered on July 1, 2010, do not use tobacco products, or (2) they and/or their family member(s) who will be covered on July 1, 2010, do use tobacco products BUT are participating in an approved tobacco cessation program.

 

The 2010-2011 enrollment period is March 15 through April 9. Inquiries may be referred to the Benefits Office, (336) 334-7226.

Lyceum Series presents Dallas dancers

The Dallas Black Dance Theatre will perform Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, as part of the University's 2009-2010 Lyceum Series. The oldest continually operating professional dance company in Dallas, Texas, the company performs a mixed repertoire of modern, jazz, ethnic and spiritual works by nationally and internationally known choreographers.

 

The event is free of charge for N.C. A&T students and staff, and $5 for the general public. Tickets are available at A&T's Ticket Office in Brown Hall. For more information contact Nichole Florence, associate director of programs, at (336) 334-7571.

Ribbon cutting to be held at new child development facility

The North Carolina A&T State University Child Development Center (CDL) will host an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, March 31, 3-6 p.m., in its new facility located at 114 Luther St.       

 

Over 60 years old, the CDL is the primary teaching, research and service laboratory for students in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department who are majoring in child development and family studies. The CDL is also available for use by other majors across campus that have an interest in child development, child behavior, special education, physical education, speech pathology, social work and other areas involving children and families. The maximum enrollment is 36 children per year.

 

N.C. A&T's Child Development Center is located near the campus tennis courts and the Alumni-Foundation Event Center parking lot. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Juliette Jackson of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at (336) 256-2750.

Suggestions are needed for 2010-11 Text in Community

The Text in Community Committee is soliciting recommendations for the 2010‐2011 campus-wide read. Send your suggestions, along with a brief description of the suggested book, to Beverly Grier, committee chair, bcgrier@ncat.edu, by Monday, April 5.

Biology to sponsor alumni reception and art auction

The Department of Biology will sponsor an Alumni Reception and Scholarship Art Auction Friday, April 9, at the Alumni-Foundation Event Center. The preview will begin at 6 p.m. and the auction at 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres, wine tasting and door prizes will be provided.

 

The ARTcetera ™ collection, presented by Regency Fine Art of Atlanta, Ga., will include lithographs, oil paintings, fine art prints, serigraphs, etchings, watercolors, celebrity collectibles and sports memorabilia. The collection also has a large selection of African American Art.

Poet, where art thou?

The University Writing Center will observe National Poetry Month by hosting a poetry contest. Outstanding original works will be awarded prizes and winners will be recognized at the Center's open mic event on Thursday, April 15. Sandra Blackstock

Sandra Blackstock, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing, is among five protégés and mentors selected from across the country to participate in the National League of Nursing (NLN)/Johnson and Johnson Leadership and Mentoring Program. The program pairs early and mid-career faculty members with NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellows. Blackstock will work with a mentor over a 12-month period to develop an individual and group project that will be presented at the 2010 NLN Education Summit. As part of the mentoring process, she will receive a stipend and travel to New York City and Las Vegas.

 

Dianne M. Fesler-Birch

Research conducted by Dianne M. Fesler-Birch, an associate professor in the School of Nursing, has been accepted for publication in the spring issue of Quality Management in Healthcare, a peer-refereed journal. "Perioperative Nurses' Ability to Critically Think" assesses perioperative (OR) nurses for the presence and degree of critical thinking skills, in an effort to affect positive patient outcomes, thus decreasing cost to the hospitals, consumers and insurance companies.

 

Constance A. Gathings

Constance A. Gathings, executive assistant in the Office of the Provost, presented at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Association for Research in Education (NCARE), Feb. 26, in Winston-Salem, N.C. Her presentation was featured in the symposium titled "The Impact of the Current Economic Condition on Adult Education Programs and Adult Learners."

 

Gathings is a participant in the City of Winston Salem University (CWSU), which is administered and funded by the City of Winston Salem. CWSU gives citizens a better understanding of city government, including the responsibilities of various city departments and the city's role in the community.  Participants are chosen through an application process.

 

Marychristiana  E. Uzochukwu

Marychristiana E. Uzochukwu, a faculty member in the School of Nursing, has begun the initial implementation of an initiative that is designed to help students help one another succeed academically in one of her classes, SRHEOS (Students Reaching and Helping Each Other Succeed). Participants are to ensure that every member completes every class assignments promptly, as well as adequately prepare for exams and other class related projects.
