McNair to speak at luncheon

Cheryl Moore McNair, wife of the late astronaut Ronald E. McNair, will give the keynote address for the 24th Annual Ronald E. McNair Commemorative Celebration and Ninth National Research Symposium, "Achieving Excellence While Continuing A Legacy," Jan. 27-29. McNair will speak at the Commemorative Celebration Luncheon.

Martin named March for Babies Chairman

Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. has been named this year's chairman of March for Babies, the March of Dimes' largest fundraiser. He has committed to help Greensboro raise $250,000 to support March of Dimes' research and community programs that help mothers have full-term pregnancies and help babies begin healthy lives.

 

The March of Dimes will host its annual kick-off breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the N.C. A&T Alumni-Foundation Event Center. This free event will allow attendees to learn more about the March of Dimes and March for Babies. To RSVP, call the Triad Division March of Dimes Office, (336) 723-4386, by Friday, Feb. 19.

WNAA launches new talk show

WNAA 90.1 FM has launched a new live talk show, "Conversations with Velma and Shirley." The 30-minute show airs on radio and online (www.aggienewsonline.com) every Tuesday at 5 p.m., featuring co-hosts Velma Speight-Buford and Shirley Taylor Frye, both A&T alumni. A&T joins Haiti relief efforts

North Carolina A&T students, faculty and staff have joined together to plan and execute a coordinated relief effort for the earthquake victims in Haiti. Since Jan. 20, the university has been collecting donated items that will include clothing, canned food, bottled water and nonperishable personal items.

 

Public collection sites are Memorial Student Union, Williams Cafeteria, McNair Hall and Murphy Hall. Items from these locations will be collected daily and delivered to the Aggie Trailer in the Aggie Stadium parking lot. Stadium drop off hours are 3:30-6:30 p.m. Donated items also will be accepted at the remaining basketball games in Corbett Sports Center.

 

The university will partner with local agencies to coordinate the delivery of these donated items to Haiti. For other details about A&T's Project Haiti relief efforts, call Ryan Maltese, project coordinator, at (336) 256-2058.

 

Agya Boakye-Boaten and Tiece Ruffin

Agya Boakye-Boaten, assistant professor and course coordinator for the African American experience foundation course in the Division of University Studies, and Tiece Ruffin, assistant professor and coordinator of the graduate program in reading education in the department of curriculum and instruction, School of Education, presented at the Third International Symposium on Service Learning: Service Learning in Higher Education hosted by the University of Indianapolis in Athens, Greece, Nov. 22-24. The invited presentation was featured in the session titled "From the Classroom to the Streets: Empowering 21st Century Students through the Ghana Street Children Literacy Initiative."

 

Anthony Graham

Anthony Graham, associate professor in the department of curriculum and instruction, has co-written a manuscript titled "Reading Achievement, Suspensions, and African American Males in Middle School." Originally appearing in the Middle Grades Research Journal in 2008, this article has been reprinted in a new book, Middle Grades Research: Exemplary Studies Linking Theory to Practice, which highlights the 10 highest peer reviewed manuscripts examined by members of the MGRJ Review Board between August 2006 and December 2008.

 

Beryl McEwen

Beryl McEwen, chair of the business education department in the School of Business and Economics, is serving a two-year term as president of Delta Pi Epsilon, whose goal is to promote research and scholarship in business education.

 

McEwen was installed at the organization's 2009 annual conference in San Francisco. She previously served as vice president of the organization.

 

Thomas Porter

Thomas Porter, professor of history, visited Moscow State University and the State Management Academy in Moscow, Russia, in October to present his paper on the fate of Soviet POWs during World War II, "Zabytye zhertvy Xolokosta: sud'ba sovetskikh voennoplennykh" ("Forgotten Victims of the Holocaust: the Fate of Soviet Prisoners of War").

 

While in Russia, Porter appeared on the state television show "Vremena" to discuss his article, "Rekonstruktsiia russskoi natsional'noi identichnosti posle raspada SSSR" ("The Reconstruction of Russian National Identity after the Collapse of the USSR"), which was published in the Russian historical journal KLIO in 2008.

 

Teresa Jo Styles

Teresa Jo Styles, a professor of journalism and mass communication, College of Arts and Sciences, presented at the "Media Interactivity: Economic and Managerial Issues Workshop" hosted by the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland. Styles' papers focused on "The Rapid Use of Social Media: Implications for Media, NGOs, Government and Corporations."

 

Styles also recently participated in a panel discussion at the American Journalism Historian Association's annual conference in Birmingham , Ala. The discussion was titled "Through Historical Perspectives: Black Press Coverage of Contemporary Issues." The panel included journalism historians from the University of Alabama, Ohio State University and Texas State University.

 

Godfrey A. Uzochukwu

Godfrey A. Uzochukwu, professor and director of the Interdisciplinary Waste Management Institute, has been elected to the executive committee of the Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (CEDD). CEDD is an association of institutional representatives who come together to improve the quality, stature and effectiveness of environmental programs at universities and colleges in the United States.
