LSAMP PROPOSES LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY

The North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation wants to partner with North Carolina A&T State University to develop a STEM Living Learning Community next fall for 20 incoming freshmen majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Robotics workshop
The STEM Academy at North Carolina A&T State University, in partnership with the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP), conducted a robotics workshop for fifth graders at Foust Elementary School on Dec. 3. Teaching STEM through robotics was the overall theme of the workshop where students built and programmed robots as well as participated in several motion experiments and calculations.
Foust Elementary School is a Title I school whose population is 56 percent African American and 35 percent Hispanic. N.C. A&T's Samuel Harrison, interim associate vice chancellor for information technology, Marcia Williams, LSAMP co-principal investigator and project director, and Dawn Murphy, LSAMP program manager, helped facilitate the workshop with Donald McCoy, a STEM consultant. Three LSAMP undergraduate students – Jonte Douglas, Teneil Sivells and Jordan Ortiz – assisted as STEM Academy Ambassadors.

Teachers needed
The Greensboro Area Mathematics and Science Education Center (GAMSEC) Saturday Academy needs teachers for its spring 2011 sessions. Subjects include algebra (II), geometry, biology, technology and NASA space career awareness. Session will be held Jan. 29, Feb. 26, March 19 and 26, and April 2, 2011, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Anjail R. Ahmad, associate professor in the English department and director of the Creative Writing Program, has been appointed to the North Carolina Writers' Network Board of Directors. The 3,000-member organization has been in existence since 1985, building audiences for literature, advocating for the literary arts and providing information and support services to writers throughout the state.
Patricia Cage-Bibbs, head women's basketball coach, has been honored by the Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In her 26th year as a head coach, Cage-Bibbs has compiled more than 470 wins in a career that has included stints at Grambling State (13 seasons), Hampton (seven seasons) and N.C. A&T (six seasons). Included in her win tally are 10 conference tournament championships, 13 regular-season championships and 13 20-win seasons. She also has won her conference's Coach of the Year award 10 times.
The Aggies are the three-time defending MEAC regular-season champions. The team also owns the MEAC record for wins with its 26-win season during the 2008-09 season.
Lemuria Carter (pictured) and Brandis Phillips, assistant professors in the Department of Accounting, worked with Porche Millington, an undergraduate student in the Department of Economics and Finance, to collect and analyze financial data from the Financial Trading Room in the School of Business and Economics. They presented their study, "The Impact of Information Technology Internal Controls on Firm Performance," at the Academy of Business Disciplines Conference in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., Nov. 10-13, where they won the Best in Session Award. The paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Organizational and End User Computing.
"Development of the Satellite Image Base Retrieval Application (SIBRA) in support of Structural Indexing of Satellite Images (SISI)," a proposal by Abdollah Homaifar, professor of chemical and electrical engineering, has been funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the amount of $50,000. Homaifar is also one of three principal investigators who recently won the National Science Foundation's New Expeditions in Computing Award, worth $10 million dollars.
An article co-authored by Thelma King, associate professor in the Business Education Department, and Beryl McEwen(pictured), interim associate dean of the School of Business and Economics, titled "Business Information Technology Education in North Carolina High Schools: Competencies, Performance, and Implications for Business Teacher Education," was published in the NABTE Review (October 2010, 37, pp. 16-27). The NABTE Review is the official journal of the National Association for Business Teacher Education.
Harmohindar Singh, professor of architectural engineering and director of the Center for Energy, Research and Technology, was recognized by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) at the 33rd World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) held Dec.7, in Washington, D.C. Awards were presented to individuals and organizations making contributions to the energy industry in their designated regions. Singh, who was awarded for his work in energy professional development, was among the three winners from Region II, which represents Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Puerto Rico.
