Small business lecture

Scott Daugherty, N.C. Commissioner for Small Business and executive director of the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), will visit the School of Business and Economics Thursday, Sept. 2, to give a lecture on "Unlocking the Job Creation Potential of Small Businesses: How Can the N.C. Commissioner for Small Business Help?" The event will be held in Merrick Hall Auditorium and will begin at 5:30 p.m. For additional information, contact Thaddeus McEwen at (336) 334-7656, ext. 4030.

AggieTrain

AggieTrain Depot is offering Microsoft® Office 2007 workshops. To register, go to www.ncat.edu/training. An NCAT email address and password are required to login and register for classes. AggieTrain Online "ElementK" is also available for all faculty, staff and students.

 

AggieTrain Online is the university's web-based comprehensive training package for faculty, staff, and students aimed to enhance technical skills and supplement existing classroom training. Training is delivered right to your desktop, offering courses that are easy (24/7), easy to use and free of charge. To register for AggieTrain Online, send an email to atrain@ncat.edu.

Personal trainers

Do you want to be healthy and physically fit? Then join the Healthy and Fit Personal Training Program! Participants receive a physiological assessment of BMI, blood pressure and body fat content with interpretation of results and risks. In addition, student trainers are available for hire from the human performance and leisure studies department (School of Education). The trainers are available from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Grief management

Counseling Services provides grief counseling for students and employees. The office is located in Murphy Hall, room 109. Services are available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcomed. For more information, call (336) 334-7727 or read Dealing with Grief.

Dr. Etta Gravely

Etta Gravely, an associate professor in the chemistry department, has been invited to serve on the newly established American Chemical Society-Hach Programs Advisory Board. Gravely was selected based on her expertise and involvement in chemistry and chemical education. The appointment is for the inaugural year of the program, which ends July 31, 2011.


The ACS-Hach Programs are a suite of award programs endowed by the Hach Scientific Foundation that support secondary chemistry education and respond to the needs of pre-service and in-service secondary teachers. The advisory board will serve as a consultative and advisory body to ACS staff and participate in the selection of scholarship and grant recipients.

Joseph L. Graves Jr.

Joseph L. Graves Jr., an associate dean for research and professor of biological sciences in the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, has written a chapter that will be included in the upcoming multi-volume collection, Voices of Black American Pioneers (Praeger/ABC-CLIO). The title of the article is "Science in the Belly of the Beast: My Career in the Academy."


The book is a collection of essays from many of the nations' foremost experts in various fields relating to medicine and the sciences. Subsequent volumes will include Law and Government (II), Aviation, Armed Forces and Astronautics (III), and Education, Social Sciences and Humanities.

Marlow Hinton

Marlow Hinton, an adjunct professor of computer science, recently conducted a four-hour workshop on "Computer Ethics, Intellectual Property and Internet Plagiarism" for the Department of Defense Joint Educational Opportunities for Minorities (JEOM) Internship Program. The workshop was held in Arlington, Va., at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) headquarters.

Judy Rashid

Judy Rashid, associate vice chancellor for student affairs  and dean of students, has been invited by the book review editor for The Review of Higher Education, the official journal for the Association for the Study of Higher Education, to provide a peer review for inclusion in the Spring 2011 issue of the journal. The selected book is Unearthing promise and potential: Our nation's historically black colleges and universities, by Marybeth Gasman, Valerie Lundy-Wagner, Tafaya Ransom, and Nelson Bowman III (2010).

 

Rashid, a member of the American College Personnel Association Commission for Student Conduct and Legal Issues, also has been invited to submit a conference session to be a sponsored program for the 2011 ACPA Convention in Baltimore, Md.

Syrulwa Somah

An article written by Syrulwa Somah, an associate professor of environmental health and occupational safety and health and graduate studies coordinator, won the American Society of Safety Engineers, Council on Practices and Standards, Best Newsletter Article for the EnvironMentor and World Focus, 2009-2010. The article is titled "Environmental Health & Safety Issues in Post-Conflict Nations: Lessons from Liberia & Ivory Coast?" Founded in 1911, ASSE is the oldest and largest professional safety organization.

Teresa Jo Styles

Teresa Jo Styles, a professor in the department of journalism and mass communication, participated in the Edelman New Media Academic Summit co-hosted by New York University and Syracuse University. Edelman, a global public relations firm, brought together executives and faculty to discuss "The Digital Reset: Communicating in an Era of Engagement." Media executives from ABC News, The  Associated Press, BBC World News, Bloomberg News, Conde Nast, Facebook, Huffington Post, Mashable, Meetup, NBC News, and News Corporation were some of the organizations participating in the discussion of  focusing on what will be next on the digital and social media horizon and how companies can prepare to move forward.
