Harold L. Martin Sr. made history April 23 as the first alumnus installed as chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
Before an audience of approximately 3,000 officials and guests, Martin was sworn in by fellow alumnus Henry E. Frye Sr., former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Martin's wife Davida, an alumna, held the Bible as her husband took the oath of office.
Martin's journey from A&T student to its chancellor had come full circle.
"What a special privilege it is to lead one of America's respected public land-grant institutions that is committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service," Martin said during his installation address. "I humbly accept this responsibility with enthusiasm."
NEW PAYROLL PROCEDURES TO REPLACE CENTRAL SYSTEM
In three months, permanent employees of North Carolina A&T State University will be able to view their pay stubs, W-2, benefits and deductions as well as submit and track time and leave information online.
The University of North Carolina System is implementing a new payroll system to replace the state's current Central Payroll System. Nine UNC campuses including N.C. A&T will go live over the next several months. UNC-Pembroke was the pilot school for this project and successfully implemented its first payroll in Banner last October. A&T is anticipating a July go-live date.
The Central Payroll System is more than 25 years old and other state agencies have already moved to the state's new BEACON payroll system or to Banner. Following a careful assessment, a joint decision was made to transition all UNC Central Payroll campuses to Banner HR/Payroll, with a Shared Services Center environment, by January 2011.
What this means for you
If you are a permanent employee, you will continue to be paid on a monthly basis, on the last working day of the month. There will be no change in your monthly pay or deductions.
If you are a student or temporary employee (e.g. graduate assistants, research assistants or adjunct faculty) and paid a flat monthly amount, you will continue to be paid on a monthly basis.
If you are a student or temporary employee paid on an hourly basis, your payroll will be changed from monthly to biweekly. You will receive a paycheck every other Friday.
All employees will be able to utilize the Banner Self-Service portal to view pay stubs and W-2 information online. Permanent employees also will be able to view up-to-date benefits and deductions information online.
Submission of time and leave in the new system
A critical component of this transition is the electronic submission, approval and tracking of time (i.e. work and leave) through an employee self-service mechanism known as “Web Time Entry” (WTE), which will be accessed using existing Self-Service in BANNER (SSB). All applicable employees, including temporary and student workers, will be trained to use this enhanced process.
Who will be trained
- • Super Users. Employees from each division/school/college who are identified as the expert and division coordinators for WTE.
- • Users. Every permanent leave accruing employee, temporary employees and student workers.
- • Approvers. Supervisors who currently approve time sheets.
Who will not be trained
- • Non-users. Non-leave accruing faculty and salaried graduate and undergraduate assistants are not required to attend WTE training. These individuals are contracted employees who are paid a flat rate evenly over a specific period of time, and they are not required to enter arrival and departure times.
- • Facilities and Police. Personnel who swipe in and out every day are not required to attend training, as their time is automatically tracked through the electronic swiping system.
The training timeline
Super users will be trained in all functionality of the WTE system during mid May. From May 17 through June 18, all applicable employees and workers (i.e. users and approvers) will be trained on the applicable functionality of the system. Sessions will be approximately two hours in length. In late June, hands-on training labs will be available for all applicable employees and student workers to practice using the system prior to going live in July.
