FOUNDATION GRANT TO HELP UNC CAMPUSES MEET NEEDS OF STUDENTS WHO LEARN DIFFERENTLY

A $3-million grant from the Oak Foundation of Geneva, Switzerland, that will enable UNC campuses to better meet the needs of students who learn differently.

Temporary Move

The Department of Housing and Residence Life Administrative Offices have moved to Barbee Hall for the summer. The offices will remain in Barbee until Aug. 5, operating Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The main contact number for Housing Administration is (336) 285-4337.

Robin N. Coger

Robin N. Coger has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering, effective July. Coger will replace Winser Alexander, who served as interim dean.

 

Coger is the founder and director of the Center for Biomedical Engineering Systems at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as well as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science within the William States Lee College of Engineering, where she served as interim chair of the department from July 2008 through June 2009.

 

Coger's B.S. degree from Cornell University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, are in mechanical engineering. Her post-doctoral research training was completed at Harvard Medical School. She is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Gwendolyn Highsmith-Quick

Gwendolyn Highsmith-Quick, associate professor of accounting, is one of five winners of the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Adviser awards for 2011. Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals. The organization's primary objective is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field.

Two engineering faculty members received the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Division Best Paper Award for 2011. The paper, "Reforming Environmental Engineering Laboratories for Sustainable Engineering: Incorporating Problem Based Learning and Case Studies into an Environmental Engineering Lab Course,"  was co-authored by Stephanie Luster-Teasley, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, and Cindy Waters, adjunct associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. They will be recognized with a plaque and cash award during the ASEE's annual conference in June.

Kate Silton, assistant professor and electronic resources librarian, participated in a panel discussion on joint research, "Individual E-Journal Subscriptions: Assembly Required," at the Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference that was held in Austin, Texas.  

Reginald M. "Reggie" Stewart has been appointed interim university space planner. He is responsible for setting up a centralized space management allocation and reporting system.            

 

Stewart is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional who has more than 11 years of experience providing architectural services in large and small architecture/engineering firms. He has worked in numerous areas including K-12 and higher education, a scientific lab and corporate business designs/management. He has a bachelor's degree in architecture from Oklahoma State University.

 

Plans are underway at A&T to expand utilization, increase efficiency and improve reporting of space management. Stewart works in facilities in the engineer's office.

Inez Tuck

Inez Tuck has been appointed dean of the School of Nursing, effective July 1. She will replace Patricia Chamings, interim dean.

 

Tuck has held numerous positions in the School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., 1997-present, as professor of nursing in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, professor and chair of the Department of Integrative Systems, associate professor, associate dean of doctoral programs, and research and associate dean of graduate programs, M.S. and Ph.D. Her career history also includes the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (1990-97) and the Department of Nursing at North Carolina Central University (1988-1990). She also has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and A&T.

 

She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from A&T, M.N. degree from the University of Florida in psychiatric/mental health nursing, Ph.D. in child development and family relations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in business administration.
